Artist's Comments

A very strange idea of mine to try and combine 3d and real in an image in a surreal but acceptable way. The object isn't meant to look super-real, but rather stays on that edge between 'it -could- be real'

Blender and Photoshop

Love to hear your responses :)

that looks like a sight that could be in a Myst game. I'd love too see the rest of that 'Age' ;)

Hmm... That gives me an idea to make sort of steampunk-ish things in odd places...

Damn...

That'll mean lots lots more work... But now I know that I can do it...

(btw. this is my first 3D + Picture edit)

really like the reflections on the water, is that just done in Ps?

Yes and no. You can't draw 3D reflections in Photoshop unless you're a brilliant painter. What I did is make a reflective floor in Blender that doesn't reflect perfectly, lower the quality of that (you'd be surprised how realistic it looks if reflections are BADLY calculated) and blend that result cleverly in Photoshop.

I also had to fake the sky in the render, to get the reflections to look like they reflect the sky as well. The original ice wasn't that reflective, really.

Thanks. One lives and learns ;)

I want to do more 'grand' pictures but I need good ideas for that. More will come ;)

aha, I've done the same sorta things and usually end up mirroring (transforming) the image then blurring/liquefying on a gradient in ps at around 60ish opacity... needless to say its a time consuming process that doesn't always work, ill have to try your way, thanks for the tip :D

Mirroring never works, because you lose depth.

If it's from a 3D basis, use reflective shapes/planes at the proper locations (you need to align it all anyway) which you later blend in seperately.

Looks better, is easier ;)
